Billie Eilish, the renowned singer known for her vibrant hair hues, embarked on a significant transformation in 2021 when she dyed her hair blonde. This change, a departure from her signature style, marked a period of introspection and an exploration of identity for the then 21-year-old artist.
In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, Eilish reflected on her hair transformation, which ignited a frenzy on social media after she unveiled her new look on Instagram. ‘And then I dyed my hair blond and I immediately was like, ‘Oh, I have no idea who I am,” she recalled.
Beyond her hair, Eilish also embraced a softer and more feminine style, shedding her grungy aesthetic. She made a captivating appearance at the Met Gala, adorned in icy blonde hair and an ethereal Oscar de la Renta peach tulle corset ball gown. In an interview with Keke Palmer on the red carpet, Eilish expressed, ‘It was time for this, and I feel like I’ve grown so much in the last few years.’ She added, ‘I’ve always wanted to do this. I was just scared and didn’t feel comfortable in my skin and I feel like I finally did.’
However, despite the softer and more elegant vibe of her sophomore album, ‘Happier Than Ever,’ the new look ultimately felt like a disconnect from Eilish’s true self. Her brother, Finneas O’Connel, who collaborated with her on the record, described it as ‘a little like being in a tornado cellar, reading a cute little story.’ He viewed it as a coping mechanism, a way for Eilish to navigate the challenges she was facing during that time.
