The Birmingham Stallions extended their undefeated record to 4-0 in a hard-fought battle against the D.C. Defenders in week four of the UFL season. Despite adverse weather conditions, both teams demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination throughout the game, which ultimately turned into a showcase of exceptional special teams play.
The Defenders controlled the ball initially but failed to capitalize on their possession, allowing the Stallions to recover a fumble and gain control. However, the Stallions were unable to convert their opportunity, and the Defenders regained possession. D.C. subsequently became the first to score on the board.
In comparison to their previous game, the Defenders’ defense displayed significant improvement, executing more effective tackles and applying consistent pressure on the Stallions’ offense. Just before the conclusion of the first half, the game was briefly suspended due to inclement weather. Upon resumption, the Defenders regained possession but committed a pivotal error, resulting in a safety that gave the Stallions the lead.
Capitalizing on their momentum, the Stallions extended their advantage to 11-6 with a successful field goal just before halftime.
The second half began with the Stallions maintaining possession of the ball, but the Defenders’ defense held firm, limiting the Stallions to another field goal. D.C. responded with a touchdown, bringing the score to 14-12.
From that point forward, the game transformed into a battle of field goals, with both teams trading scores. The Birmingham Stallions ultimately secured the victory with the final field goal, prevailing 20-18.
The significance of special teams play was highlighted in this highly competitive game. Both kickers, Matthew McCrane for the Defenders and Ramiz Ahmed for the Stallions, played crucial roles, each making multiple successful field goals, including Ahmed’s longest attempt from 46 yards.
Matt Corral, quarterback for the Birmingham Stallions, earned the MVP title for his impressive performance under challenging conditions. Despite the rain, Corral completed 19 of 29 pass attempts for 240 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing the ball seven times for 51 yards. His ability to extend plays and make key first downs proved instrumental in the Stallions’ victory.
Looking ahead, the Birmingham Stallions will face the Houston Roughnecks on Saturday, April 27th at 7 P.M. Eastern. The D.C. Defenders, on the other hand, will take on the St. Louis Battllehawks on Sunday, April 28th at 12 P.M. Eastern.
