Amidst escalating protests in Kolkata over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded a polygraph test for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel. The BJP alleges that Banerjee is shielding those involved in the case and that Goel, the police commissioner, has attempted to downplay the incident by labeling it a suicide. The doctor’s parents have refuted this claim, stating that they were initially told their daughter was ill and later informed of her death by suicide.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), now investigating the case, is examining the possibility of former principal of RG Kar Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, being involved in classifying the doctor’s death as suicide prematurely. The doctor’s autopsy revealed she was sexually assaulted and strangled to death, with 25 internal and external injuries found on her body.
On Tuesday, BJP protesters, who had taken out a rally in Kolkata demanding justice for the victim and the chief minister’s resignation, were met with a forceful response from the West Bengal Police. The BJP has condemned the use of water cannons, tear gas, and lathi charges against the peaceful protesters.
Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has accused the police of “brutal repression” and threatened to stall the state if the “brutalities” are not stopped. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability, with the BJP demanding a thorough investigation into the doctor’s death and the alleged cover-up by the West Bengal government.
