Michael Lamjathang Haokip, a prominent BJP leader and a member of the Thadou community in Manipur, has taken legal action against those he alleges were involved in an attack on his residence. Haokip filed a formal police complaint, naming 15 individuals who he claims were directly or indirectly involved in the incident, which occurred on Sunday night. The attack came just hours after Haokip participated in a panel discussion on a local TV channel, focusing on the complex issue of ‘Kuki supremacy and its agenda’.
In his complaint, Haokip provided evidence of WhatsApp conversations where individuals discussed his potential murder. The screenshots, included as part of the FIR, reveal chilling messages. One individual explicitly stated, “SA (separate administration) will not be acceptable without killing LJT (Lamjathang) first, even if the central government is willing to grant us.” Another offered a chilling incentive, stating, “I promise to give my village land if anyone kills Lamjathang.”
The police are currently investigating the phone numbers associated with these messages, seeking confirmation from service providers and potentially enlisting the help of central anti-terror cybersecurity experts.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the attack, calling it an act of cowardice. He assured the public that legal action will be taken against the perpetrators. The incident has highlighted the deep-seated ethnic tensions in the state, particularly between the Meitei community, who primarily reside in the Imphal Valley region, and the Kuki community, who largely inhabit the hill districts. Since May of last year, violence between these groups has resulted in over 200 deaths and displaced thousands of people.
This latest attack underscores the severity of the situation in Manipur and the need for a swift and comprehensive resolution to the ongoing conflict.
