In a recent high-profile incident in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Sanket Bawankule, son of the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, is alleged to have been involved in a hit-and-run accident. The incident occurred on Monday night, when an Audi car, registered in Sanket Bawankule’s name, collided with several vehicles, including two cars and a two-wheeler. Passengers in the vehicles sustained minor injuries due to the reckless driving.
The Sitabuldi police have registered a case of rash driving against Arjun Haware, the driver of the Audi, and Ronit Chintanwar, who was sitting next to the driver. While the news agency report did not confirm Bawankule’s mention in the complaint, the police have confirmed that the luxury car was registered in his name.
Responding to the incident, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule has confirmed the rash driving case involving his son. He has urged the police to conduct a fair and comprehensive investigation, stating that no one should be judged differently and that justice should be equal for all, regardless of their political affiliations. “That car is in the name of my son. The police should conduct a fair and complete investigation of this accident; no one should be judged differently. Those who are guilty should be charged and action should be taken against them. Justice should be equal to all, whether one is related to politics or anyone else. The law must be equal for all,” Bawankule told reporters.
The incident has sparked political reactions, with opposition parties accusing the authorities of trying to protect Bawankule. The Maharashtra Congress, in a tweet accompanied by a purported video of the incident, alleged that the entire home department was working to save and hide the BJP leader’s son. “In Nagpur, the son of a senior BJP leader hit four to five cars in the middle of the night in a drunken state, after which the entire home department went to work to save and hide the boy. So is law and order only to torture the common people?” the tweet read.
The matter is currently under investigation by the police. This incident has raised serious concerns about road safety and the potential for influence in legal proceedings, further intensifying political tensions in the state.
