In a fit of rage over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) unsatisfactory performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rashtriya Hindu Parishad president Govind Parashar vented his frustration by destroying a television set and setting it ablaze. Following the announcement of the election results on June 4th, Parashar expressed his dismay, stating that the nation had once again fallen into the hands of those intent on its fragmentation. He also called upon the BJP to demonstrate greater respect and prioritize its loyal workers within the party.
Parashar’s statement was accompanied by a scathing critique: “The country has once again fallen into the clutches of those who once chanted, ‘Bharat tere tukde honge inshallah inshallah.'” He added, “The Bharatiya Janata Party must respect its workers and accord them their rightful place within the party.”
Videos of Parashar’s outburst have gone viral on social media, capturing the moment he ripped the television off the wall and repeatedly smashed it on the ground. In another video, he is seen setting the television on fire in the street.
The recently concluded Lok Sabha elections saw the BJP secure 240 seats, falling short of the 272 majority mark for the first time since 2014. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), however, crossed the majority threshold comfortably. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Janata Dal-United (JDU), Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) emerged as crucial players with their respective wins of 16, 12, 7, and 5 seats.
Meanwhile, the opposition alliance, known as the INDIA bloc, secured 234 seats. Exit polls had projected a more favorable outcome for the BJP, predicting over 300 seats and over 400 seats for the NDA.
Parashar’s actions have sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters. Many have expressed concern over the growing frustration and anger within the BJP, which could potentially destabilize the party and hinder its future electoral prospects.
