BJP Shuts Down Talk of Constitutional Changes, Citing Modi’s Stance

In a recent statement, former Maharashtra Chief Minister and BJP Rajya Sabha member, Ashok Chavan, declared that individual opinions regarding the Constitution hold no significance. This assertion was made in response to a party colleague’s remarks about potential changes to the statute book. Chavan categorically stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s position on the matter is paramount and that the Constitution will remain unaltered.

Chavan further highlighted that a BJP MP who had previously spoken about constitutional amendments has been denied re-nomination in Karnataka, indicating the party’s stance on the issue. He emphasized that the paramount focus lies on the views expressed by Modi, as he represents the party’s leadership.

Chavan was likely alluding to the controversial comments made by BJP’s Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha member, Anantkumar Hegde. Hegde had suggested the necessity of a two-thirds majority in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, as well as control over more than 20 states, to effect constitutional changes. However, Chavan reiterated Modi’s firm stance against any such alterations.

Concerning the Maratha quota issue, Chavan conveyed that he has been addressing community supporters, explaining the implementation of the reservation law enacted by the ‘Mahayuti’ government in Maharashtra. He emphasized that despite legal challenges, the law remains in effect and has not been suspended.
