Calgary’s Pups with Soul Rescue, established years ago, has rescued over 830 dogs. However, they’ve observed a recurring pattern: black dogs often get overlooked for adoption. Co-founder Christina Thomas expresses her bewilderment, stating, “I don’t understand it, but they always get looked over. There’s this perception that they’re not as cute, photogenic, or their eyes aren’t blue. To me, they’re perfect.”
This phenomenon, known as “Black Dog Syndrome” among shelters and rescues worldwide, prompted the creation of the Black Dog Gala in Calgary. The event aims to showcase the charm and appeal of black dogs and highlight the joy of witnessing their successful adoption into loving homes.
Theresa Oystreck, a dedicated foster and volunteer with Pups with Soul Rescue, has firsthand experience with this joy. She frequently takes in medical cases from the rescue, providing a safe haven for dogs to recover before they are adopted into loving families. Oystreck shares, “Watching them transition from scared or hurt or broken to the lovable dogs you see right now is overwhelming and amazing. It just shows the power of love and a safe environment.”
The Black Dog Gala, scheduled for May 11th, is a sold-out success. However, its underlying message resonates: every dog, regardless of coat color, deserves a loving home. Pups with Soul Rescue currently has 60 dogs waiting for adoption and is always seeking volunteers and fosters to support their cause. Their unwavering commitment to finding forever homes for all dogs, regardless of their appearance, is a testament to the transformative power of love and compassion in animal welfare.
