The Rev. Lorenzo Sewell, pastor of 180 Church, is set to deliver a speech at the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Thursday night. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Sewell addressed the growing trend of Black voters gravitating towards former President Donald Trump, a phenomenon he believes is being downplayed by Democrats. Sewell cites his own observations at his church, where he witnessed a significant turnout of Black individuals, including rappers, preachers, teachers, and those not affiliated with the church, attending an event with Trump last month. He points to recent polls that show a decline in support for President Biden among Black voters in key swing states like Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Sewell attributes Trump’s appeal to Black voters to his unconventional approach, his willingness to engage with Black communities, and his focus on economic empowerment. He highlights the Platinum Plan, a Trump initiative aimed at providing resources and support to Black entrepreneurs and churches. Sewell argues that Trump’s background as a New Yorker contributes to his cultural awareness and intelligence, allowing him to connect with diverse communities. He also emphasizes Trump’s willingness to take action and implement concrete plans, which resonates with many voters.
Sewell, who grew up in a challenging environment marked by drug violence and the loss of his brother to murder, emphasizes that he is speaking at the RNC to advocate for the “forgotten” and “marginalized” people in Michigan. He urges Black voters to research the Republican Party and its history of supporting Black communities, citing examples like the abolition of slavery and the prominence of Black Republicans throughout history, including figures like Frederick Douglass and Thomas Sowell. He rejects the notion that Black voters are solely loyal to the Democratic Party, arguing that they have a long history of supporting Republicans and that Trump is helping to bring that back to the forefront.
