Since the calendar flipped to 2024, Blake Snell’s fortunes have taken a dramatic downturn. The reigning NL Cy Young award winner has been plagued by a string of setbacks, with his latest misfortune being a left adductor strain that has landed him on the 15-day injured list.
Prior to being placed on the injured list, Snell was scheduled to start Wednesday’s home game against the New York Mets. The 31-year-old left-hander was expected to cash in with a lucrative long-term deal this winter, but instead, he joined other Scott Boras clients who faced disappointing results in free agency.
Snell eventually signed a two-year, $62 million contract with the Giants on March 19. However, his early results in the Bay Area have been far from impressive. While the rest of the Giants starting rotation has performed well, Snell has struggled mightily, posting an 0-3 record with an 11.57 ERA in just three starts.
The Giants’ starting rotation has been a bright spot for the team this season, with Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks standing out as early performers. Webb, who finished second to Snell in the NL Cy Young race last year, has continued his strong form, while Hicks has made a seamless transition to a starting role.
Snell’s struggles have been a major disappointment for the Giants, who were hoping he would provide a boost to their rotation. The team will now have to rely on other pitchers to step up in his absence, as they look to stay competitive in a tough NL West division.
