Blinken Condemns ICC Prosecutor’s Pursuit of Netanyahu, Laments Hamas’ Role in Gaza War

During a wide-ranging testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Secretary of State Antony Blinken strongly criticized the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) prosecutor for seeking the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He emphasized the deep opposition of the United States to the ICC’s actions. Additionally, Blinken condemned Hamas for its role in initiating the recent Gaza war, while expressing condolences for the loss of life during the conflict.

The hearing was frequently disrupted by protesters who condemned the Biden administration’s approach to Israel and the Gaza war. Despite the disruptions, Blinken reiterated the US position that the ICC lacks jurisdiction over Israel and that its actions were “deeply misguided.” He declared that the ICC prosecutor was “fundamentally wrong” to equate Israeli officials with Hamas leaders.

In response to questions from senators, Blinken stated that the administration was evaluating potential responses to the ICC’s actions and would work with Congress to develop an appropriate reaction. He also denounced Hamas’ attacks on Israel in October 2022, which he described as the catalyst for the Gaza war.

Blinken’s testimony also addressed the recent death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. While expressing condolences for the loss, he clarified that this gesture did not alter the administration’s assessment of Raisi’s repressive actions as a judge and president.

Blinken’s comments come amidst ongoing indirect talks between the United States and Iran. The talks aim to manage risks and prevent the escalation of regional tensions, including those stemming from the Israel-Hamas conflict. Blinken emphasized the importance of conveying concerns to Iran regarding its destabilizing actions.
