Before he became the iconic Jack Reacher, Alan Ritchson made a name for himself as the tough-talking linebacker Kevin “Thad” Castle in the raunchy and hilarious football comedy Blue Mountain State. This cult favorite sports series, which originally aired on Spike TV from 2010-2011, is now making a triumphant return to streaming on various platforms, including Netflix, starting May 1.
Blue Mountain State follows the exploits of the “Mountain Goats,” a dysfunctional and hilarious fictional Midwest football team filled with ne’er-do-wells who prioritize hard partying over gridiron glory. The show ran for three seasons before being canceled by Lionsgate TV in 2012. However, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, a follow-up movie, Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland, was released in 2016. This film will also be available to stream on Netflix starting May 1.
The return of Blue Mountain State to streaming is particularly exciting for fans of Alan Ritchson, who has since gained fame for his role in Amazon’s Reacher series. Ritchson’s success on Reacher has sparked rumors of a potential sequel series to Blue Mountain State, with Deadline reporting in February that Lionsgate Television is in negotiations to bring the show back. If the series does get the official green light, it is likely to head to Amazon, given Ritchson’s current affiliation with the streaming service.
