Bluetooth 6.0: What’s New and Why It Matters

This new version introduces a suite of enhancements that focus on improving power efficiency, security, and location accuracy.

One of the primary focuses of Bluetooth 6.0 is enhancing power consumption. The new version introduces two key features: Decision-Based Advertising Filtering and Monitoring Advertisers. These features work together to ensure that devices only scan for data packets when they are relevant to their application, reducing unnecessary energy expenditure. In addition, Bluetooth 6.0 enables devices to detect when another device they want to connect to moves out of range, allowing them to cancel connection attempts and conserve battery life.

Another major innovation in Bluetooth 6.0 is the introduction of Bluetooth Channel Sounding, a new technology that offers two significant upgrades: enhanced security and improved location accuracy. By allowing Bluetooth 6.0 devices to communicate wirelessly to determine each other’s locations, Bluetooth Channel Sounding makes it significantly harder to spoof Bluetooth signals and manipulate their strength. The Bluetooth SIG claims that this technology delivers “centimeter-level accuracy over considerable distances.” This advancement holds immense potential for services like Android Find My Device and Apple’s Find My, which currently rely on Ultra Wide Band (UWB) chips for precise location tracking. With Bluetooth 6.0, devices could provide their exact location to authorized devices without the need for UWB chips.
