Mumbai’s civic body has undertaken a comprehensive tree-trimming initiative, pruning 22,334 branches from large and potentially hazardous trees ahead of the monsoon season. This measure aims to prevent accidents and ensure public safety during the heavy rainfall. Additionally, the municipality has issued tree-trimming notices to 4,909 establishments, including private and government properties.
The Mumbai civic body has emphasized the importance of public cooperation in relocating parked vehicles to facilitate efficient tree-trimming operations. In past monsoon seasons, tree-fall incidents have resulted in injuries and fatalities. To mitigate these risks, the civic body has proactively identified and addressed hazardous trees.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has jurisdiction over approximately 29.75 lakh trees, of which 15,51,132 are located on private properties while 10,67,641 are on government premises. Of the 1,862,246 roadside trees, 1,13,534 required trimming, and 22,334 trees had already been pruned by April 19th. The remaining trees will be addressed by June 7th.
In addition to pruning, the civic body has removed 386 dead, infested, or bent trees to eliminate potential safety hazards. The BMC has highlighted that the responsibility for trimming trees on housing society premises, private properties, and government land rests with the respective authority, landowner, or society. Residents are urged to obtain permission from the BMC before trimming trees on private or government property. By adhering to these safety measures, Mumbai is better prepared to navigate the monsoon season while preserving the city’s green cover.
