BMC to Compensate Parents of Children Who Drowned in Open Water Tank

Following the tragic incident where two young brothers drowned in an open water tank in Wadala, the Bombay High Court has ordered the BMC to provide special compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the bereaved parents. The family, who resided on a footpath outside St Joseph’s High School, has stated their intention to relocate to Baroda, Gujarat, once they receive the compensation, as they lack a permanent residence in the city.

The BMC had previously taken action to demolish illegal hutments in the area, including the children’s home, after the incident. The Matunga police registered an FIR and arrested the supervisor responsible for the open water tank’s lack of cover.

The court, after taking suo moto cognizance of the matter, had directed the BMC to open an account within 48 hours since the parents did not possess one. The court had also slammed the BMC for failing to cover the water tank.

The Matunga police are currently investigating the matter. The unfortunate drowning incident has brought to light the need for stricter safety measures around open water bodies, particularly in areas where children may be present.
