Residents Rally Against Bonnerworth Park Redevelopment
An online petition calling for the suspension of Bonnerworth Park’s redevelopment in Peterborough, Ontario, has garnered significant support. Launched by local resident D’arcy Jenish, the petition has amassed over 2,500 signatures within two weeks.
The $4 million project, scheduled to commence construction in the fall, includes a 16-court pickleball complex, a renovated skatepark, a bike track, and a parking lot. However, concerns have been raised about the potential impact on the park’s tranquil nature and surrounding residential area.
Petitioners highlight several issues, including noise pollution from the pickleball courts, loss of green space, and the lack of in-depth environmental impact studies. D’arcy Jenish emphasizes the importance of green spaces for the well-being of residents and children.
Former Peterborough Mayor Sylvia Sutherland has denounced the redevelopment as “a travesty,” questioning the placement of the pickleball courts and parking lot in a residential area. Residents argue that the city has failed to adequately assess the potential impacts on noise levels and traffic flow.
Despite a motion to pause the project for further community consultation being defeated by city council in early April, the petition’s growing support underscores the community’s concerns. City council had previously approved the redevelopment in October 2023.
Councilor Lesley Parnell, co-chairperson of the city’s community services portfolio, maintains that the project will proceed as approved, offering enhanced sports opportunities for residents. However, Jenish and other residents are exploring alternative options to halt the city’s plans, including the possibility of legal action.
