Boots, a beloved high street retailer, has announced plans to close an additional 47 stores in the coming months. This announcement follows the closure of 253 stores in June 2023, as part of a larger plan to permanently close 300 locations. The remaining 47 stores are scheduled to shut their doors after the summer concludes.
The company has reassured shoppers that all affected locations have a replacement Boots store within a three-mile radius. Additionally, all employees working in the closing branches will be offered positions at other Boots stores. This closure strategy is part of the company’s efforts to “consolidate a number of stores in close proximity to each other.”
In a quarterly results announcement last month, Boots stated that “Evolving the store estate in this way allows Boots to concentrate its team members where they are needed and focus investment more acutely in individual stores with the ambition of consistently delivering an excellent and reliable service in a fresh and up-to-date environment.”
Tim Wentworth, CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, the parent company of Boots, expressed concerns about the current operating environment, highlighting “persistent pressures on the US consumer and the impact of recent marketplace dynamics, which have eroded pharmacy margins.”
Boots joins other high street retailers like Next, M&S, and Starbucks, which have announced upcoming store closures. These closures come after luxury fashion brand Ted Baker and popular make-up brand Morphe were forced to shut all of their high-street stores.
The closures reflect a challenging landscape for high street retailers, who are facing increasing pressure from online competition and changing consumer habits. This trend is likely to continue, with more retailers expected to announce store closures in the coming months.
