India’s hopes in the men’s doubles event at the US Open 2024 came to an end on Sunday as Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden fell in the third round. The second-seeded pair, who had triumphed at the Australian Open earlier this year, faced a tough challenge against the 16th-seeded Argentine duo of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni. The match lasted only 66 minutes, with the Argentinians emerging victorious with a score of 1-6, 5-7.
Bopanna, at 44 years of age, has already announced his retirement from Davis Cup competition. The veteran player’s future participation in tournaments like the Australian Open, which he and Ebden won together in January 2025, remains uncertain.
This marks the end of India’s men’s doubles campaign at the US Open. Sumit Nagal exited the men’s singles in the opening round, while Yuki Bhambri and N Sriram Balaji also suffered early defeats in the men’s doubles. However, Bopanna’s US Open run is not over entirely. He will be competing in the mixed doubles event alongside his Indonesian partner Aldila Sutjiadi. Interestingly, in a twist of fate, Bopanna and Ebden will now face each other as opponents in the mixed doubles competition. Ebden is partnering with Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova, who are the fourth seeds in the mixed doubles draw.
