Boris Johnson reportedly expressed a desire to be black on the night of Barack Obama’s election as US president, according to British-Ghanian journalist Afua Hirsch. Hirsch stated that Johnson had asked her about her origin at a party celebrating Obama’s victory in 2008. Boris Johnson’s ex-wife, Marina Wheeler, claimed that she could not recall the event but expressed concern when informed of it. Wheeler, who divorced Johnson in 2020 after separating in 2018, feels more liberated since the divorce. In October, she was appointed as Labour’s “whistleblowing tsar,” tasked with overseeing initiatives to enhance women’s protection and employment rights against harassment, abuse, and sexual assault. Afua Hirsch, an accomplished author, was born in Norway to a British father and a Ghanaian mother and raised in Wimbledon. She studied PPE at Oxford and initially pursued a career as a barrister before transitioning to journalism, contributing to The Guardian and Sky News. Hirsch has previously accused Johnson of making numerous racist remarks and has characterized his “oafish stupidity” as an integral part of his electoral appeal. Previously, Johnson has acknowledged writing “abysmal things” about climate change during his time as a journalist and has admitted to being a “massive skeptic.” Additionally, he has stated that while serving as mayor of London and prime minister, he initially believed climate change could be “a load of nonsense” but eventually decided to support it.
