Borussia Dortmund Signs Brazilian Defender Yan Couto on Loan from Manchester City

Borussia Dortmund has announced the signing of Brazilian defender Yan Couto on loan from Manchester City. The 22-year-old right-back will join the German club until June 30, 2025, with the option for the move to become permanent after that.

Couto arrives in Dortmund after spending two seasons on loan at La Liga side Girona, where he played a significant role in the team’s impressive third-place finish last season. During his time in Spain, he scored two goals and provided 12 assists in 59 La Liga appearances.

Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, expressed his excitement about Couto’s arrival, highlighting the defender’s impressive development in Spain and his potential for further growth. “He is exactly what we wanted for this position,” Kehl stated.

Couto, who made his debut for the Brazilian national team at the age of 21, has four appearances for the Selecao. He joined Manchester City in 2020 from Coritiba FC on a five-year deal for a six million euro fee but never featured for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Brazilian defender expressed his delight at joining Dortmund, describing it as a “dream come true.” “Borussia Dortmund is a special club,” Couto said in the club’s press release. “Every child in Brazil knows how great this club is, knows the fans, and is fascinated by the ‘Yellow Wall.’ I can’t wait to wear the BVB shirt for the first time and experience the power and emotions in this brilliant stadium.”

Couto becomes Dortmund’s fourth major summer signing after the arrival of striker Serhou Guirassy and defender Waldemar Anton, both from Stuttgart, and veteran Germany midfielder Pascal Gross.
