The Sauber Formula 1 team has confirmed that both Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will be departing at the end of the 2024 season. The news follows earlier confirmation that Nico Hulkenberg will join the Audi-controlled team in 2025. With Hulkenberg’s seat secured, the team is currently focusing on securing a driver for the second seat, with F2 championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto being the leading candidate.

Bottas, in a separate press release, acknowledged the decision and reflected on his time with the team. He expressed that despite the challenging nature of such situations, the decision was reached after constructive discussions and a realization that the necessary conditions for mutual growth were not met. Bottas emphasized the positive journey he shared with Sauber, highlighting the growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments experienced together. He expressed gratitude for the trust and support he received throughout his tenure and expressed his excitement for the future, both for himself and the team.
While the team is yet to confirm who will join Hulkenberg in 2025, Bortoleto’s current position at the top of the F2 standings makes him the frontrunner for the seat. The final decision, however, will be announced by the team in due course.
The departure of Bottas and Zhou marks a significant shift for Sauber as they prepare for the 2025 season with a new driver lineup and a renewed focus on achieving success with their new partnership with Audi.
