India is in mourning following the passing of T P Gopalan Nambiar, a trailblazing industrialist and founder of the renowned BPL Group, who died at 94 on Thursday. Known as TPG, he was a visionary entrepreneur instrumental in shaping India’s electronics manufacturing and telecommunications sectors, leaving a lasting legacy on the nation’s economic landscape.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences on X, honoring Nambiar’s commitment to enhancing India’s economic strength. “Shri TPG Nambiar Ji was a pioneering innovator and industrialist, a staunch advocate for a robust Indian economy. I am deeply pained by his passing. My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers,” Modi stated.
Nambiar, who had been unwell for some time, passed away at his home in Bengaluru around 10:15 AM, as confirmed by a family member to PTI.
Prominent figures from both the political and business realms expressed their sorrow. Former Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, a long-time friend of Nambiar, expressed his sadness on X: “I am saddened by the passing of Shri TPG Nambiar, the founder of the iconic BPL brand, who was a dear acquaintance. His remarkable contributions and legacy will always be cherished. My deepest condolences to his family.”
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also expressed his sympathies, recognizing Nambiar’s significant influence in the Indian business community. “He was a key figure in the business landscape, founding BPL, which advanced the telecommunications industry in India,” Vijayan remarked, noting that Nambiar’s initiatives inspired future industrialists.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan, also paid tribute to Nambiar, recalling him as a visionary who transformed India’s electronics sector. Satheesan attributed BPL’s popularity in the 1990s to Nambiar’s unwavering dedication and hard work.
