Brent’s Cultural Tapestry Takes Center Stage at London Fashion Week

Get ready for a vibrant celebration of cultural diversity at London Fashion Week! “We Wear Heritage,” a captivating fashion event organized by CVS Brent with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, is set to shine a spotlight on the rich cultural tapestry of Brent.

This initiative brings together 11 distinct community groups, each dedicated to preserving and sharing their unique heritage through traditional textiles, attire, and costumes. These groups have meticulously developed local projects that gather and showcase their stories, bringing their legacies to life for a wider audience.

On September 16th, 2024, the culmination of these efforts will be unveiled at a grand fashion show held at St Mary’s Church in Marylebone. Curated by Rafael dos Santos, an event producer and director of Best of Brazil Community CIC, the show kicks off at 1 p.m., offering a captivating platform where each garment tells a story of cultural pride and history.

From intricately hand-embroidered Afghan garments to the vibrant and energetic Somali textiles, each piece will be a testament to the artistic expression and heritage of its community. Prepare to be immersed in a tapestry of traditional designs, showcasing the beauty and diversity of Brent’s vibrant communities.

The event reaches its pinnacle with the “Mi Moda Indígena” showcase, returning after its successful debut in 2023. This grand finale, curated by Rafael dos Santos, presents the work of seven Indigenous Brazilian communities. Fashion designer Seanny Arts and her daughter, Reby Oliveira, lead this creative endeavor, transforming natural elements like tree bark, palm leaf fiber, and fish scales into exquisite, hand-painted outfits that capture the essence of the Amazon Forest.

Rafael expresses his pride in showcasing the designs of these Indigenous communities, stating, “I am so proud to showcase the designer of our Indigenous people from the Brazilian Amazon region. There are about 35k Brazilian residents in Brent, so it’s an honour for me to showcase our culture to a city that welcomes our heritage.”

This event promises to be a truly enriching experience, offering a glimpse into the vibrant cultural heritage of Brent and highlighting the power of fashion to tell stories and connect communities.
