The Milwaukee Brewers snapped a two-game losing streak against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, securing a narrow 3-2 victory at PNC Park. The Brewers, who dropped the first two games of the four-game series, improved to 5-2 in their past seven outings.
William Contreras played a pivotal role in Milwaukee’s win, going 3-for-4 with an RBI single that gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Sal Frelick also contributed offensively, finishing 2-for-4 and scoring the game’s opening run.
Pittsburgh threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jack Suwinski doubled with one out, but the Brewers’ defense held firm to preserve the lead.
Reliever Bryan Hudson (2-0) was credited with the win for Milwaukee after allowing just one hit in 1 2/3 innings of work. Joel Payamps came on in the ninth inning and recorded the final three outs for his fourth save of the season.
Luis L. Ortiz (0-1) took the loss for Pittsburgh, surrendering three runs (two unearned) on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Opener Josh Fleming also struggled, allowing two walks and recording just one out before being replaced by Ortiz.
Bryan Reynolds paced the Pirates’ offense, going 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in the third inning that brought Pittsburgh within 3-2. However, the Pirates were unable to capitalize on several opportunities, leaving nine runners stranded on base.
The victory gives Milwaukee a 2-1 lead in the series, which concludes with a matinee matchup on Thursday afternoon.
