Acclaimed actor Brian Tyree Henry has been cast in Universal’s untitled musical project, directed by the visionary Michel Gondry. Set in the nostalgic summer of 1977, the film draws inspiration from Pharrell Williams’ childhood neighborhood in Virginia Beach. Henry joins a stellar cast that includes Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, and Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph.
Based on a script by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson, the film will be produced by Pharrell Williams and Mimi Valdés through their company I Am Other, and Gil Netter through Gil Netter Productions. Universal’s Ryan Jones and Christine Sun will oversee the production.
Henry is renowned for his Emmy-nominated performance in Donald Glover’s acclaimed series ‘Atlanta’ and his Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in the 2022 film ‘Causeway.’ His stage credits include a Tony Award nomination for his work in Kenneth Lonergan’s ‘Lobby Hero.’ Henry has recently starred in ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ and the FX drama thriller series ‘Class of ’09.’ He will soon lend his voice to the animated prequel ‘Transformers One’ and appear in the sports drama ‘The Fire Inside.’
