The British Museum has made significant progress in recovering artifacts that were stolen last year. The museum has announced the recovery of an additional 268 artifacts, bringing the total number of retrieved items to 626.
Initially, around 2,000 items, dating from 1,500BC to the 19th century, made of gold and semi-precious stones, were reported missing. The news shocked the museum community and the public, as it was feared that many of the stolen artifacts would never be recovered.
The recovery effort was sparked by the discovery that some of the stolen artifacts were being sold on eBay. The museum launched an investigation, which led to the identification and recovery of a number of the missing items.
The British Museum has praised the efforts of its staff, as well as the public, for their help in recovering the stolen artifacts. The museum is continuing its investigation into the theft and is working to improve its security measures to prevent future thefts.
