A study conducted by Ambassador Cruise Line and Tetley, a tea provider, has unveiled a surprising truth about British holiday habits: six out of ten Brits pack teabags for their trips. This deep-seated love for tea extends beyond the borders of the UK, with almost half of British holidaymakers turning to a comforting cuppa when the weather disappoints abroad.
The study delves into the reasons behind this national obsession with tea. For many, it’s the ultimate pick-me-up, with 43% of Brits turning to tea to improve their mood. This love affair with tea is so profound that even the dreary British summer doesn’t dampen their enthusiasm for a proper cuppa. English Breakfast emerged as the most popular choice, with 56% of respondents selecting it as their favorite, followed by Earl Grey and green tea at a considerably lower 8%.
While tea reigns supreme, home-cooked meals also feature prominently on the list of missed comforts, with 27% of Brits yearning for their favorite dinner while on holiday. However, this longing pales in comparison to the desire for a classic cup of tea.
The study also sheds light on tea consumption habits, revealing that the average Brit enjoys two to three cups of tea daily, with afternoon teatime holding a special place in their hearts.
Gordon Nardini, a spokesperson for Ambassador Cruise Line, emphasizes the importance of taking time to savor a cup of tea, stating, “Despite Brits loving tea, many of us leave little time to properly sit down and enjoy it. While we know that people turn to it as a comforting beverage in times of need, as a traditionally British cruise line, we want to champion the beloved brew and bring back the tradition of afternoon tea.”
Seb Michaelis, Master Blender at Tetley, echoes this sentiment, noting, “It’s no surprise tea is right up there on the ‘must-have’ packing list – tea lovers know their teas and love their brands.”
Beyond its role as a mood booster, tea also serves as a stress reliever for many, with 49% of respondents turning to a cuppa when feeling stressed and 43% when feeling sad.
Seb Michaelis further emphasizes the multifaceted nature of tea, stating, “Whether rain or shine tea is a natural, comforting beverage and a social glue that delivers a perfect pause in the day. We at Tetley believe the simple pleasure of a cup of tea with a teatime treat is the perfect backdrop for a feel good moment alone or a social catch up.”
