Brittney Griner, a renowned WNBA superstar, has revealed that she contemplated suicide during her distressing nine-month imprisonment in Russia. Arrested at the Moscow airport in February 2022 for alleged possession of vape cartridges containing hashish oil, Griner faced a nine-year prison sentence. In excerpts from an upcoming ABC Television interview, Griner shared her harrowing experience, marked by feelings of despair and dehumanization. Confined to unsanitary conditions, Griner recounted a chilling incident where she found a knife in a room, instilling a sense of impending danger. Reflecting on the moment she discovered the cartridges in her luggage, Griner expressed a sense of impending doom, uttering, “My life is over right here.” Griner’s ordeal culminated in a prisoner swap in December 2022, where she was exchanged for notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. Having endured the harrowing experience, Griner vowed to refrain from playing basketball abroad. Her full interview will be aired on May 1, coinciding with the release of her memoir, which chronicles the details of her incarceration.
