The Denver Broncos recently traded for a veteran quarterback, but they are still expected to target a signal-caller in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. With the 12th overall pick, the Broncos have several options at the quarterback position, including Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon’s Bo Nix. However, according to NFL insider Eli Manning, the Broncos may have their sights set on Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.
Manning, a legendary quarterback himself, recently revealed that the Broncos have a strong interest in McCarthy, who is considered one of the top prospects in the draft. Manning also noted that McCarthy would be interested in playing for the Broncos, but his ultimate destination is out of his control.
McCarthy, who led Michigan to an undefeated season and a national championship in 2023, has impressed scouts with his arm strength, mobility, and decision-making. Despite not having any college seasons with 3,000 passing yards or 500 rushing yards, McCarthy is seen as a quarterback with a high ceiling and the potential to become a franchise player in the NFL.
If the Broncos are truly determined to acquire McCarthy, they may need to trade up in the draft. Recent mock drafts have projected McCarthy to be selected in the top five, potentially by a team like the Carolina Panthers, who are in need of a franchise quarterback. General manager George Paton will have to evaluate the Broncos’ options and make a decision on whether to make a move for McCarthy, who has received high praise from both Manning and Broncos head coach Sean Payton.
