Acclaimed actress and model Brooke Shields has officially declared her candidacy for the presidency of the Actors’ Equity Association, the union representing over 51,000 actors and stage managers in theaters across the United States. Shields’ decision to run stems from her belief that the union requires strong leadership at this crucial moment.
Her vast experience on Broadway includes starring roles in notable productions such as ‘The Addams Family’ (as Morticia Addams), ‘Cabaret’ (as Sally Bowles), and ‘Chicago’ (as Roxie Hart). Beyond her stage credits, Shields has also graced the silver screen and modeled for various campaigns.
Shields aspires to utilize her platform and star power to elevate the status of Equity members. She aims to command respect for the union in negotiations, government lobbying, and the pursuit of arts funding. Drawing on her experience as a parent and advocate, Shields believes she possesses the skills necessary to guide the union effectively.
The position of Equity president entails negotiating union contracts, spearheading unionization efforts, and addressing the evolving challenges faced by the theater industry. With the lingering effects of the pandemic, members have advocated for increased wages and improved working conditions amidst rising production costs. Shields acknowledges the need for greater arts funding support, particularly as theaters strive to meet the escalating expenses.
Her candidacy joins two other contenders: Wydetta Carter, Equity’s current first vice president, and Erin Maureen Koster, third vice president. The outcome of the election will shape the future of the Actors’ Equity Association as it navigates the evolving landscape of the performing arts industry.
