The Border Security Force (BSF) has announced significant progress in fencing along the Tripura-Bangladesh border.
Out of 11 previously unfenced sections, six have been covered, spanning a total length of 7 kilometers. The remaining five sections, extending several kilometers, will be fenced after consultations with local communities and the neighboring country.
BSF Tripura’s Inspector General Piyush Patel Purushottam Das emphasized the force’s focus on combatting militancy, maintaining border integrity, and addressing local law and order issues.
In the past year, BSF has facilitated the surrender of 18 cadres of the outlawed insurgent group National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT). Additionally, over 1,000 individuals have been apprehended for illegal border crossings, including Bangladeshi citizens, Indian nationals, and Rohingya people.
The BSF has also seized a substantial amount of drugs and contraband, including narcotics worth Rs 94 crore and 2,582 heads of cattle worth Rs 3.53 crore.
To address the challenges of illegal infiltration and exfiltration, BSF has intensified surveillance and apprehended 29 touts in collaboration with the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The remaining unfenced sections will be covered with a single-row fence by next year.
BSF is also implementing various measures to plug gaps and enhance security, including installing surveillance cameras and encouraging villagers living near the border to relocate to fenced areas.
While no loss of life has occurred during border operations, the BSF has emphasized the use of non-lethal weapons to prevent such incidents.
