The Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Bulgaria has partnered with Stadler to propel sustainable mobility and upgrade rail transport in Bulgaria. Their collaboration entails the procurement of seven zero-emission KISS double-decker trains, marking Stadler’s inaugural contract in Bulgaria and a notable stride in the Balkans. This deal not only includes the initial delivery but also offers the option for three additional units, along with 15 years of fleet maintenance and comprehensive staff training. With this milestone, Stadler’s reach extends to 48 countries, showcasing their global impact.
Each of these four-car trains is designed to reach speeds of 160 km/h and accommodate at least 300 passengers. The first train is slated for delivery within 26 months of contract signing, promising a swift integration into Bulgaria’s rail network. Georgi Gvozdeykov, the Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Bulgaria, emphasized that this procurement addresses the imperative to modernize the existing fleet, aligning with Bulgaria’s sustainable mobility objectives. By embracing state-of-the-art zero-emission technology, Bulgaria aims not only to enhance passenger comfort but also to advance its sustainability agenda, a pressing concern across Europe. Through this partnership with Stadler, Bulgaria anticipates efficient operations and significant contributions to sustainable mobility for years to come.
These cutting-edge double-decker trains are tailored for 1435 mm track gauge operation and feature a 25 kV/50 Hz power supply system. Additionally, a minimum of 10% of seats in each class are reserved for passengers with reduced mobility, ensuring inclusivity. Compliance with TSI requirements, European standards, and Bulgarian railway regulations, as well as adherence to UIC standards, underscores the commitment to safety and regulatory adherence.
