Caitlin Clark, the rookie guard for the Indiana Fever, etched her name into the WNBA record books on Wednesday night. In a 101-93 loss to the Dallas Wings in Arlington, Texas, Clark dished out a staggering 19 assists, surpassing Courtney Vandersloot’s previous single-game record of 18. Vandersloot, currently playing for the New York Liberty, set the mark back in August 2020 while a member of the Chicago Sky.
Clark’s record-breaking assist came in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter. With the Fever trailing 93-90, Clark drove to the basket before finding Kelsey Mitchell on the left wing for a game-tying 3-pointer with 2:22 remaining. However, the Dallas Wings responded by scoring the game’s final eight points, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Despite the loss, Clark’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. In addition to her record-breaking assist total, she also contributed 24 points and six rebounds. While she did commit six turnovers, Clark’s impact on the game was undeniable.
The 22-year-old Clark is averaging 17.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game in her rookie season after being selected first overall in the WNBA draft out of Iowa. Her previous career high in assists came during her college days, when she recorded 18 in a win against Penn State back in January 2022.
The Indiana Fever, now 11-15, had their two-game winning streak snapped with the loss to Dallas. The Wings, meanwhile, improve to 6-19 on the season.
