There will be no uncertainty at the top of the draft on Thursday night. USC quarterback Caleb Williams is widely expected to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Chicago Bears. Williams himself, along with the Bears organization and football enthusiasts, are in full knowledge of this outcome.
Williams, in an interview with Dan Wiederer of the Tribune on Wednesday, reflected on his childhood aspirations. He set ambitious goals and relentlessly pursued them, culminating in this pivotal moment: “I’m here. I’m ready for the moment.”
Williams’ dreams have been in the making since he was a young boy of 10. He envisions hearing his name announced, donning a Bears baseball cap, embracing Commissioner Roger Goodell, and posing proudly with the No. 1 Bears jersey. He described the experience as “surreal.”
With a fervent desire to return to the gridiron, Williams eagerly anticipates rejoining a football team. “That has probably been the toughest part for me,” he admitted. “Get back in the locker room, be around the guys, be involved every single day and let it rip.”
Williams has already forged connections with future teammates, including T.J. Edwards, DJ Moore, and Cole Kmet. Additionally, he has spent considerable time with General Manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus, solidifying their relationship. “It’s been fun to be around them,” Williams said of Poles and Eberflus. “They’re very detailed. They always have a plan. And they seem like they’re very routine-like, which is how I’ve been throughout my whole life.”
As the first day of the rest of his career approaches, Williams acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead. He is prepared to embrace them, driven by the unwavering belief that he is destined for greatness.
