Calgary Halal Meat Outlets Shut Down Due to Illegal Operations

In response to an ongoing RCMP investigation, Alberta Health Services (AHS) has ordered the closure of seven Calgary halal meat outlets. The affected businesses include Shawdesi Foods & Catering, Shawdesi Bazaar, Bismillah Meat & Grocery, Mustafa Madani Halal Meat and Groceries, Maher Fresh Halal Meat, Cadalow Halal Meat, and Alta Halal Meat & Donair.

The closure orders stem from an investigation into unlawful livestock dealing and illegal slaughter operations in Southern Alberta. AHS has cited concerns about the sale of uninspected meat, which poses potential health risks to consumers.

A spokesperson for AHS stated that the closures are necessary to protect the public while a thorough investigation is conducted. The businesses will remain shut until they can prove that all their food products come from safe and legitimate sources.

The RCMP continues its criminal probe into the meat sales, while AHS conducts its own investigation and considers potential public health charges. Meat microbiologist Lynn McMullen emphasizes the importance of food inspections to prevent the spread of foodborne pathogens that can cause serious illnesses or even death.

A significant number of facilities are involved in this case, raising concerns among AHS. It is currently unknown whether any individuals have become ill from consuming meat from the closed outlets.
