Calgary Implements 28 Recommendations to Enhance Downtown Safety and Vibrancy

The City of Calgary has embarked on a comprehensive plan to enhance safety and vibrancy in its downtown area. Following the recommendations of the Downtown Safety Leadership Table, a joint effort involving the mayor and downtown leaders, the city is implementing 28 initiatives to improve the downtown experience for visitors and address underlying issues.

The recommendations were developed after a thorough analysis of gaps and challenges in four main areas: government response, strategic communication, community collaboration, and specialized initiatives. They encompass both short-term actions, such as improved cleaning and maintenance in public spaces, and long-term strategies that require multi-level government collaboration.

Among the key recommendations is the establishment of year-round daytime resource centers providing support and services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Additionally, the report suggests reviewing the usage and feasibility of the city’s Plus 15 network downtown, exploring the potential closure or dismantling of certain sections to encourage street-level foot traffic.

The recommendations also emphasize the importance of increasing police presence in the downtown core and provide support for vulnerable populations. The city is already implementing some of the recommendations, including increased police officers and maintenance improvements, with ongoing progress updates expected throughout 2024.

The Downtown Safety Leadership Table’s recommendations represent a roadmap for improving downtown safety and vibrancy. The city administration, in collaboration with partners, is committed to implementing these initiatives, ensuring that every Calgarian can enjoy a safe and inclusive downtown experience.
