Calgary Library Workers Seek Mediation After Rejecting Unsatisfactory Wage Deal

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1169, representing library workers in Calgary, has rejected a wage deal offered by the city, describing it as “insulting.” According to a news release issued on Monday, the city proposed a seven percent wage increase over three years for Calgary Public Library workers. This offer falls short of the nine percent granted to CUPE Local 38, representing “inside” workers within the City of Calgary. Last week, CUPE Local 38 members voted in favor of potential labor action after the city failed to address critical union concerns.

CUPE Local 1169 President Elsa Gee expressed disappointment with the city’s offer, highlighting its inadequacy compared to deals accepted by other groups and its failure to meet the needs of library staff. Gee emphasized the dedication and hard work of library employees despite facing financial challenges, and urged the city to acknowledge and address their critical needs.

The union intends to consult and collaborate with other union groups pursuing wage increases through the mediation process. CUPE Local 1169 remains committed to advocating for fair compensation that recognizes the vital role library workers play in the community.
