Calgary Addresses High Demand for Swimming Lessons with Additional Spots
As the demand for swimming lessons in Calgary continues to surge, the city has announced the opening of thousands of additional spots at Southland Leisure Centre, Village Square Leisure Centre, and Glenmore Aquatic Centre. Registration for these spots will commence at 6 a.m. on Thursday through the City of Calgary’s website.
This initiative is part of the city’s efforts to increase swimming programming and reach pre-pandemic service levels by 2025. The city acknowledges the significant backlog of swimming lessons created by the pandemic and the unprecedented demand in recent years.
Michelle Tait, with the city’s recreation and social programs, emphasizes the importance of swimming lessons not only as a fun activity but also as a critical life-saving skill. She notes that drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death, and these additional lessons will significantly contribute to Calgarians acquiring this essential skill as summer approaches.
The city acknowledges the critical need for swimming lessons, particularly during the summer months when the majority of water-related fatalities occur. The additional spots will provide ample opportunities for residents to learn this vital skill and enhance their safety.
