Calgary Swelters Under Heatwave, Residents Seek Relief in River, Air Conditioning

Calgarians are facing a desperate search for relief from the heat as Wednesday marks the hottest day of the year so far. The sweltering temperatures have sent air conditioner sales soaring, with Kevin Dyer of High Point Heating and Cooling reporting a surge in calls from residents seeking to beat the heat. Dyer emphasizes the importance of air conditioning, stating, “It’s the difference between sleeping or not,” adding that he installed AC in his own home to combat the sleepless nights brought on by the heat. Dyer’s company has ramped up staffing to meet the increased demand, with crews working overtime to install and service air conditioners.

While some Calgarians have the luxury of air conditioning, others are turning to the city’s rivers for relief. However, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) is urging caution, reminding residents of the dangers of the fast-flowing water. Since Saturday, CFD has responded to over 20 water rescues, with many calls involving people using unsafe floaties, capsized rafts, and those not wearing life jackets. The department is increasing patrols this week to respond quickly to any emergencies.

“The river is flowing quite fast and high so you’re going to be moving fast and need to be able to navigate very quickly,” says Carol Henke, public information officer for the fire department. “Where there’s water there’s risk and there’s always some level of risk… But you can decrease that risk if you have the proper equipment and know what you are doing.” The CFD is particularly warning against using rafts in the Harvie Passage, a popular spot known for its rapids and intended for experienced kayakers in proper gear. Two rafters had to be rescued from the rapids on Tuesday.

As temperatures continue to climb, Calgarians are left seeking respite from the heatwave, with some turning to the comforting cool of air conditioning while others brave the unpredictable currents of the city’s rivers. The CFD’s warnings underscore the importance of caution and preparedness when engaging in water activities, especially during periods of extreme heat.
