Calgary Transit Ridership Surges, CTrain Breaks Record
Calgary Transit has released data indicating continued ridership growth in 2024. The latest figures reveal over 25 million trips in the first quarter of the year, representing a 21% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Transit officials attribute this growth to increased demand and expanded off-peak service levels.
The CTrain has also reached a significant milestone, with boardings hitting an all-time high of 8,792,500 in a single month. This surpasses the previous record set in November 2014. The City of Calgary credits increased demand and expanded off-peak service levels for this record-breaking performance.
Improving Safety Perceptions
According to survey results released on Wednesday, perceptions of safety on Calgary Transit are also improving. The survey indicated that 72% of respondents feel safe riding the CTrain during the day, up from 67% in May 2023. Furthermore, 39% of respondents reported feeling safe riding the CTrain after dark, compared to 33% previously. While there is still room for improvement, these results suggest that efforts to enhance safety are having a positive impact.
However, approximately 49% of Calgarians surveyed stated that they avoid taking the bus or CTrain due to safety concerns. The city acknowledges that there is still work to be done in addressing these concerns.
Future Plans
Calgary Transit has announced plans to expand services in 2024 and 2025. These expansions aim to increase ridership and enhance accessibility, ultimately improving the customer experience. The city is committed to providing safe, reliable, and accessible public transportation for all Calgarians.
