Turkish captain Hakan Calhanoglu will be absent from Turkiye’s crucial Euro 2024 round of 16 clash against Austria, set to take place at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig. The Inter Milan star, who had started all three of Turkiye’s group stage matches in the ongoing European Championship, is not even included in the squad for the knockout match. The 30-year-old midfielder picked up his second yellow card in Turkiye’s final group stage game against the Czech Republic. Earlier in the tournament, Calhanoglu received his first caution in the opening 3-1 victory over Georgia, earning a yellow card for a clumsy tackle on Giorgi Kochorashvili. According to UEFA regulations, players are automatically suspended after accumulating two yellow cards.
Besides Calhanoglu, Turkiye will also be without the services of Samet Akaydin due to suspension. Meanwhile, Austria will be missing winger Patrick Wimmer. In Euro 2024, a player is suspended for a game if they receive two yellow cards. Similarly, a four-yellow card accumulation also results in a suspension. However, all yellow cards are reset at the end of the quarterfinal stage, meaning no player will carry the risk of a suspension due to yellow cards into the semifinal.
