The California Department of Water Resources has announced an increased water supply allocation for 2024. The forecasted allocation has increased to 40%, up from 30% last month. This increase would provide an additional 420,000 acre-feet of water, according to the department. That’s enough water to serve around 1.5 million households for a year. The increase in allocation is due to the above-average snowpack, rainfall, and runoff that California has received in recent months. Lake Oroville, the state’s largest reservoir, is currently sitting at 124% of average and is at around 94% capacity. The reservoir is expected to reach full capacity next month. Allocations are updated monthly as snowpack, rainfall, and runoff information is assessed, with a final allocation typically determined in May or June.
