In a significant move towards a more sustainable food industry, Cambium and La Vague are joining forces to launch a new line of reusable containers designed specifically for the Quebec market. This strategic partnership aims to make reusables a mainstream option, accessible to both small cafes and large grocery stores.
The launch, timed to coincide with “La Semaine québécoise de réduction des déchets” (Quebec Waste Reduction Week), signifies a commitment to tackling the growing issue of single-use packaging waste. The new line of containers, entirely designed and manufactured in Quebec, boasts unique features and customization options, making them ideal for widespread adoption across the food sector.
“With the financial support of RECYC-QUÉBEC, we have designed containers with features that set the benchmark for reusables in Quebec. Standardization will enable widespread adoption, making reusable solutions accessible to everyone, from supermarkets to small cafes,” explains Annie Legroulx, Director of Innovation at Cambium.
La Vague, known for its successful “La tasse” initiative, which has already brought reusable cups to over 450 businesses across Quebec, is expanding its reach with “La boîte 2.0.” This new program, supported by the Chantier de l’économie sociale and funded by the Government of Canada, utilizes the same deposit-return system as “La tasse.” Customers can purchase a reusable container by paying a deposit, which is refunded when they return the container to a participating business. The containers are then thoroughly washed and reintroduced into circulation, creating a closed-loop system.
“The throwaway culture is unsustainable if we want a strong, resilient food industry. By combining our strengths, we are addressing the specific needs of retailers and paving the way for a more sustainable future. We are incredibly proud of this collaboration, which will significantly reduce waste at its source,” says Aurore Courtieux-Boinot, co-founder of La Vague.
This launch comes at a pivotal moment when regulations on single-use items are tightening, and consumers and businesses are actively seeking eco-friendly alternatives. According to RECYC-QUÉBEC, an alarming 45,000 tonnes of single-use products end up in Quebec landfills annually. Cambium and La Vague are providing a much-needed solution, encouraging a shift towards a ‘less, but better’ consumption model.
The media is invited to learn more about this exciting initiative and meet with the team at Cambium and La Vague. The reusable containers are currently available for pre-sale on the Cambium website and through “La boîte 2.0” for members of the La Vague network.
