Cambodia is setting its sights on significantly increasing the number of Indian tourists this year with its new initiative, “India Tourism Year.” Recognizing the rapid expansion of India’s tourism sector, Cambodia sees immense potential in attracting more Indian visitors. The country aims to achieve a remarkable 3-4 fold increase in Indian tourist arrivals in 2024, according to a Cambodian tourism ministry official. This marks the first time Cambodia has dedicated a campaign specifically targeting the Indian market. The goal is to capitalize on the positive momentum in India’s tourism industry and bring a larger number of Indian travelers to experience Cambodia’s unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Cambodia’s efforts to attract Indian tourists have already yielded positive results. In 2023, the country welcomed 68,836 Indian tourists, exceeding 91% of the pre-Covid levels seen in 2019 when the country hosted 75,286 Indian visitors. The first six months of 2024 alone saw around 32,000-33,000 Indian tourists visit Cambodia, representing a 17% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
The “India Tourism Year” initiative involves active participation in the Business, Leisure, Travel, and MICE Tourism Exhibition 2024 (BLTM). This platform provides a crucial opportunity to showcase Cambodia’s tourism potential and effectively promote the “1st Cambodia and India Tourism Year 2024” campaign. These efforts align with the ministry’s “BUILD + 3Ds” strategic initiative and the “Visit Siem Reap 2024” campaign, both aimed at attracting a greater number of Indian tourists and investors to Cambodia.
To raise awareness of its diverse destinations, Cambodia has launched digital campaigns and established partnerships with prominent travel influencers. In addition to online efforts, Cambodia is enhancing its air connectivity with India. Currently, there are four direct flights between India and Cambodia, with IndiGo airlines poised to introduce a new flight in November, connecting Siem Reap with India. This addition will bring the total number of direct flights between the two countries to five per week, making travel even more convenient for Indian tourists.
Cambodia offers a range of visa options to facilitate Indian travel, including visa-on-arrival facilities, e-visa options, and embassy-issued visas. The country attracts a diverse range of travelers, encompassing leisure, religious, and medical tourists. Cambodia is also positioning itself as a suitable destination for large business events, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and weddings.
Through these comprehensive initiatives, Cambodia is confident in establishing itself as a preferred destination for Indian tourists. The country is committed to strengthening tourism ties between India and Cambodia, creating a win-win situation for both nations.
