On Monday, the Indian government summoned the Canadian Deputy High Commissioner to the Ministry of External Affairs over the troubling incident of separatist slogans being raised at an event attended by Prime Minister Trudeau.
India vehemently denounced the continued presence of such actions and highlighted the political space granted in Canada to separatism, extremism, and violence. The official statement emphasized that these expressions create a climate of violence and criminality, harming Canada’s own citizens.
During the event in Toronto commemorating Khalsa Day, attendees loudly chanted pro-Khalistan slogans in the presence of Prime Minister Trudeau and opposition leader Poilievre. This incident reflects a growing trend of anti-India sentiment in Canada.
The slogans intensified as Trudeau approached the stage, clearly audible in the video footage released by Canada-based CPAC TV. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow were also present during the event.
A similar occurrence took place as Pierre Poilievre took the stage, further inciting the crowd.
This incident occurred during one of Toronto’s largest annual gatherings, which celebrates Vaisakhi, a significant event in the Sikh community. The Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwaras Council (OSGC) commemorates the founding of the Sikh community and the Sikh New Year with this festival.
