Canada Upgrades Airport Security with Cutting-Edge CT Technology

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is taking airport security to the next level with a multi-year plan to install cutting-edge computed tomography (CT) technology at checkpoints across the country. This significant investment reflects CATSA’s commitment to enhancing aviation security while simultaneously improving the passenger experience.

The new CT technology represents a breakthrough in security screening. It generates advanced three-dimensional rotatable images, allowing security officers to more effectively detect explosives and other potential threats. This innovation translates into a more streamlined and efficient process for travelers. For the first time, passengers will be able to keep permitted liquids, aerosols, gels (under 100 mL), medical devices, and large electronics in their carry-on luggage during screening.

The first full installation of this groundbreaking CT system has already been completed at the newly established ABC security screening checkpoint at Vancouver International Airport. This achievement is a testament to the successful collaboration between CATSA and the Airport Authority. Additional installations are scheduled to begin at other airports across Canada starting in the fall of 2024, with the rollout continuing over the coming years. The successful nationwide deployment of this technology will depend heavily on the continued cooperation of airport authorities.

CATSA, in partnership with its third-party screening contractors and key air travel partners, is committed to delivering top-tier security screening and service throughout the implementation of this state-of-the-art CT technology. The goal is to ensure a safer and smoother air travel experience for everyone.

“We’re focused on implementing state-of-the-art solutions that contribute to an enhanced screening experience while ensuring the highest levels of security.” said Nada Semaan, CATSA President and Chief Executive Officer. “While the deployment of this technology spans over several years, we’re excited about the positive change it will bring to the overall passenger experience.”

The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport, expressed his enthusiasm about the technology’s potential. “It’s great to see this innovative use of technology in action. This will make security screening more effective and improve the passenger experience for Canadians and tourists in our airports across Canada.”

Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO of Vancouver International Airport (YVR), echoed these sentiments. “I am excited to introduce our newly renovated domestic checkpoint showcasing advanced security screening equipment – a first in Canada. With this innovative system, you can now move through security effortlessly—no need to remove liquids, aerosols, gels, or large electronics from your carry-on bags—while maintaining the highest security standards. Our $30 million investment has expanded and modernized this space with the traveler in mind and reflects our commitment to blending functionality with a unique sense of place.”
