Canada’s Governor General Visits Regina Open Door Society

Canada’s Governor General, Mary Simon, paid a visit to the Regina Open Door Society on Tuesday during her three-day provincial tour. The organization’s mission is to assist newcomers in their integration into Canadian society through language training, government information, and support for personal and professional success. Learners at the society shared their compelling immigration journeys with Governor General Simon. She spoke about her own upbringing, where she learned an Indigenous language at home, English in school, and is currently studying French. Ricardo Arisnabarreta, the society’s language services manager, expressed the profound impact of Simon’s visit on the learners. He highlighted the value of government officials witnessing the challenges and triumphs of language learners and newcomers. “This visit allows them to see firsthand the struggles faced by individuals learning a new language,” explained Arisnabarreta. “But more importantly, they witness the immense pride these individuals take in sharing their communities, customs, and traditions.” Tatiana Zotova, a teacher at the society, described the visit as an opportunity to personalize the role of the Governor General. She noted the relatable nature of Simon’s experience for the learners. “The Governor General shared her journey of learning a second language and made it relatable to our clients,” said Zotova. “They had the chance to share their own experiences and stories of coming to Canada.” The visit to the Regina Open Door Society served as a powerful reminder of the transformative work being done to support newcomers in Canada. It also underlined the importance of recognizing the resilience and determination of those seeking to build a new life in a new country.
