Canadian Canoe Museum Unveils New State-of-the-Art Facility in Peterborough

The Canadian Canoe Museum (CCM) in Peterborough, Ontario, is set to open its new state-of-the-art, two-story facility on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 1:00 pm ET. Located on a picturesque five-acre lakefront property at 2077 Ashburnham Drive, the 65,000-square-foot museum will showcase its entire collection of over 600 watercraft, providing visitors with engaging and immersive exhibits. The event will also be streamed live on the museum’s website.

The new museum is designed by Unity Design Studio (formerly Lett Architects Inc.) and features a design inspired by craftsmanship and natural elements, drawing inspiration from the canoe. The building is recognized as one of the Best Cultural Spots by National Geographic’s Best of the World 2024 and is a custodian of a significant national cultural asset.

The $45 million project allows the museum to exhibit its entire collection in a space that meets the highest artifact conservation standards of a Class “A” controlled museum environment. This new facility enhances the presentation of these vessels through engaging, immersive exhibits and offers both on-land and on-water experiences for visitors.

Upon entering, visitors will be greeted by Indigenous languages and narratives, with the local Michi Saagig dialect of Anishnaabemowin prominently featured alongside English and French. The museum also integrates other Indigenous languages in specific exhibits, supported by the TD Bank Group through the TD Ready Commitment.
