The Pet Gala, a fashion extravaganza dedicated to canine couture, took place on Monday night at New York’s American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog. Designer Anthony Rubio, the mastermind behind this annual event, sent 18 dogs strutting down the red carpet in outfits inspired by celebrity looks from this year’s Met Gala.
Rubio’s intention was not to mock or imitate the Met Gala but rather to celebrate the artistry and innovation of the world’s top designers. The proceeds from the gala, priced at $300 per ticket, will support the host museum, akin to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefiting from the Met Gala.
The furry fashionistas showcased a diverse range of styles, with even a shih tzu embodying the role of Chris Hemsworth. The canine lineup included Daffodil the Pomeranian channeling Jennifer Lopez, Kimba the Chihuahua as Zendaya, Miley-Jo the Chorkie as Cardi B, and Bastian the terrier as Colman Domingo. True to the Met Gala’s theme of the Garden of Time, the outfits exuded a sense of elegance and historical charm.
Rubio’s dedication to this project was evident in the short timeframe he had to adapt the garments for the canine models. Despite the challenges, Rubio praised the dogs’ cooperation, noting that they were far easier to work with than humans. The outfits will be on display at the Museum of the Dog throughout June, offering visitors a chance to admire the intricate craftsmanship and creativity behind each piece.
Rubio expressed his hope that the Pet Gala will continue to grow and evolve, with a special message for Anna Wintour, the Met Gala’s impresario: “I would love to be the first one to walk on the red carpet with a canine model in canine couture. Just putting it out there.” This aspiration reflects Rubio’s passion for canine couture and his belief in its potential to elevate and inspire.
