Cape Town’s Former Hospital Transformed into Vibrant Mama Shelter Hotel

The iconic Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town’s central business district (CBD) is set to undergo a remarkable transformation, emerging as the vibrant Mama Shelter Cape Town Hotel. This strategic move marks Ennismore Hotels’ first venture into South Africa, promising to revitalize the area with a fresh and energetic hospitality experience.

Occupying a prime location, the Mama Shelter Cape Town Hotel will offer guests a unique blend of chic and affordable accommodations, fostering a lively social atmosphere. The project encompasses not only the hotel but also an array of retail spaces, offices, and residential apartments, creating a multifunctional space that complements the hotel’s offerings.

The hotel itself will boast 127 rooms categorized into three types, alongside 68 branded residences comprising studios and one to four-bedroom apartments. Guests can expect a range of amenities, including a state-of-the-art gym, a rooftop restaurant, a refreshing pool with a deck area, meeting rooms spanning 213 square meters, and a substantial 380 square meters of co-working space designed to cater to the needs of modern travelers.

In addition to traditional hotel amenities, Ennismore is introducing ‘Mama Play,’ an innovative 742 square meter entertainment hub within the hotel. This dedicated space will feature a tenpin bowling alley, karaoke facilities, and event spaces, offering guests a unique recreational experience. Furthermore, Ennismore plans to open a separate restaurant on Bree Street, expanding its culinary offerings in the city.

Cedric Gobilliard, Brand COO for Mama Shelter at Ennismore, emphasizes the significance of this project, marking the first time any of Ennismore’s brands have established a presence in South Africa. He describes Mama Shelter as more than just a hotel or restaurant; it’s envisioned as a vibrant community hub where people can eat, drink, socialize, and dream.

With Ennismore’s global presence extending across more than 35 countries, the introduction of Mama Shelter Cape Town is expected to attract a wider range of travelers and tourists to the region. The hotel aims to provide a distinctive and engaging hospitality experience, enhancing global travel and tourism while contributing to the local hospitality landscape. The development is anticipated to not only enrich the local community but also attract a greater number of tourists to South Africa, boosting both travel and economic activity in the region.
